How To Reduce Your Everyday Waste

Nov 24, 2017

Everyday waste is a major issue all over the world, and here in Australia, it’s no different. While the average person might not be able to control how major corporations and landfills deal with waste and recycling, there’s still something that we all can do in our personal capacity to reduce the amount of waste we generate every day. Here are some tips for reducing your everyday waste.

1. BRING YOUR OWN CUP

Do you start every day with a cup of coffee? It’s definitely something most Australians enjoy doing. What you may not know is that over one billion take away coffee cups end up in landfills every year, and that many can’t be recycled easily as they’ve been treated with a waterproof polyethylene lining. Many coffee shops offer a discount if you bring your own coffee cup, and investing in one will keep your coffee hotter for longer, and help the environment.

2. STOP BUYING IN BULK

While purchasing foods in bulk might seem cost effective, many times it ends up languishing in the fridge before being tossed away. It’s estimated that the average household tosses away up to $1,050 worth of food every year, which works out to roughly 14% of all food purchases being thrown away. Doing smaller and more frequent shopping runs and planning your meals more carefully, will save you money in the long run.

3. DISPOSE OF DEVICES RESPONSIBLY

With devices being upgraded at a lightning speed, many of us end up with old or broken ones that we don’t know what to do with. Disposing of devices incorrectly can have a serious impact on the environment as it can leach mercury and heavy metals into the earth, compromising land and water. Over 90% of average devices can be recycled, which is why it’s important to not just throw it in the bin, but instead look to recycle it properly.

These are just a few steps that you can take to reduce the waste being produced by yourself and your family. It might not seem like much, but in the long run, the collective efforts of every Australian counts. Remember that if you’re ever in doubt about how to handle or dispose of any type of waste, you can contact your local waste disposal experts, WM Waste Management Services
