At WM Waste, we are always looking for new ways to recycle more of the material we collect. One of the challenges has been dealing with mattress residue and recovered timber that isn't suitable to be mulched. Until now, these items have often been difficult to recycle.
That’s about to change.
Our partners at KTS Recycling have received a waste to energy cap allocation from Recycling Victoria to establish a new waste to energy biochar facility in Dandenong South. This project will process up to 15,000 tonnes of material every year, including the mattress and timber waste collected by WM Waste.
KTS Recycling are proposing to use Earth System’s char maker technology to create biochar, a valuable product that improves soil health and locks away carbon. At the same time, the process will generate renewable electricity that powers on-site equipment.
This means less waste going to landfill, more renewable energy for local operations, and a sustainable product that can support agriculture.
