Many of us are guilty of looking at tasks needed to be done around the house and thinking it would be easier to do it ourselves. The same sentiment often applies to waste management. When you’ve cleared out an unruly garden and are left with heaps of green detritus you might think that all you need is a pair of hands and a big truck, but you couldn’t be further from reality. Waste management is a messy, specialised business and you’re better off hiring a professional.
If you’re going to be paying for a service you’ll want to know you’re getting your money’s worth. There are a few factors worth considering when choosing a waste management provider. Taking them into consideration when making your choice will save you time, money and mess!
The first and most important factor is licensing. Your waste management service provider must adhere to ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environmental) management systems. The Australian government also has strict licensing requirements that give organisations authority to remove and transport waste. If your service provider can’t produce evidence of this, you should go with someone who can.
The second factor is recycling capacity. While your waste management service will be coming to your property to collect your waste, you need to know how they will handle recyclable materials and if they have the capacity to support it. If your service provider cannot provide you with the reassurance that your large and bulky items (like mattresses and stoves) will be sorted and recycled responsibly, in all likelihood it will be carted off to a landfill and dumped – adding to Australia’s already burdened landfill system.
Ideally, a waste management provider should already have an established relationship with a local City Council or transfer station (for example, WM Waste works with the Knox Transfer Station and City Council to service Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs).
There are no doubt dozens of ways you can judge a waste management provider, but we’ve found that these two are the most important when making the choice. And remember that if you have any waste management concerns you need dealt with, WM Waste is happy to assist.
